Safely Securing Flatbed Cargo

At ShipGroup we move a quite a bit of open-deck (or more commonly called) Flatbed cargo.  Safe and secure transport is ultimately the driver's responsibility, however, it is important that shippers understand basic safety concepts as they are more familiar with the freight they are shipping than the drivers who are often seeing it for the first time.

Securing cargo on flatbed trucks is essential for ensuring the safety of both the cargo being transported and the drivers and other road users. In the United States, there are several regulations and best practices that must be followed to secure flatbed cargo properly.

Regulations:

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require that all cargo be secured in a way that prevents it from shifting or falling from the vehicle.

The FMCSA mandates that all cargo must be secured with appropriate devices, including chains, straps, and binders.

The FMCSA requires that all cargo be secured with devices that have a working load limit (WLL) equal to or greater than the weight of the cargo being secured.

The FMCSA mandates that all cargo must be secured in a way that prevents any of it from protruding beyond the sides, front, or rear of the vehicle.

Best Practices:

Inspect the flatbed trailer and cargo for any damage or defects before transporting. Any damage or defects should be repaired before loading cargo.

Use the correct type and number of tie-downs to secure the cargo. The number of tie-downs required depends on the weight and size of the cargo being transported.

Make sure that the tie-downs are in good condition and that they are used properly to secure the cargo.

Use edge protectors to prevent damage to cargo and tie-downs.

Position the cargo correctly on the flatbed, distributing the weight evenly to prevent shifting during transport.

Use blocking and bracing to prevent the cargo from shifting or tipping during transport.

Cover the cargo with a tarp or other appropriate cover to protect it from weather and debris.

Train drivers and other personnel involved in loading and securing cargo to ensure that they are aware of regulations and best practices for securing flatbed cargo.

Overall, it is important to follow both the regulations and best practices for securing flatbed cargo in the USA to ensure the safety of the cargo and everyone involved in its transportation.
